We're going back to elementary school for this one!
ROYGBIV stands for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. I'm not sure if they still teach the colour spectrum this way in elementary, but it stuck for me and probably did for a lot of you too! It's also just fun to say :)
If you've been following my work for a while, you'll know I love painting prairies. As my style evolves, it leads me to new places, but my subjects will always remain. For this collection of prairies, I wanted to push myself with colours I don't typically use and really explore the full spectrum.
I love yellow fields and vast blue sky, but light and weather do incredible things to the places we think we know. Yellows can turn green and pull peach from the sky as the sun sets. Blues can be speckled with shades of violet and neon pink, creating a kaleidoscope of colour. It was incredible to discover that no matter what I put on the canvas, nature did it first. Colours I might not normally play with suddenly felt so fitting.
I haven't delved into prairies for a few years so the chance to return to wide open spaces with an intent to capture wild and colourful skies felt like coming home as a teenager with a tattoo or a mohawk. It's me, just a little different :)
ROYGBIV will launch April 21 with 23 new prairie landscape paintings.
