I've created a much more comprehensive guide to replace this one. Check it out over here: NEW HANGING GUIDE
One of the areas I get the most questions about is how to hang/display art in your home. While there are some general guidelines, I encourage you to think outside of the box when it comes to showcasing your art. That being said, here are some tips to get you started:
- It's best to hang single artwork at eye level, and 60 inches from centre to the floor is the magic number.
- If you're hanging your art above furniture, it can be 4-6 inches above the piece.
- If the art is going above a sofa or console, the piece should be approximately 2/3 width of the furniture.
- Slightly too big art is always better than too small. So if you have to choose, go bigger.
- When hanging two art pieces, treat them as one and still hang them 60 inches from the floor to the centre of the grouping. This rule also applies to groups of three and four. Make sure they are spaced only a few inches apart, so they look together and not disconnected.
- Symmetry is good, not not always necessary. Don't be afraid to break "the rules" and hang a smaller piece off centre, or hang various pieces at different heights.
- Hang art in unexpected places. There are so many spots aside from above your sofa that are often overlooked. For example, the end of a long hallway, powder rooms, the wall at the end or beginning of a stairwell... turning the corner and seeing the unexpected is always fun.
- Go beyond your walls - smaller art looks great styled on a bookshelf, or leaned against a wall on a console table.
