Do you know what Yoho means? Before I tell you, let's chat about my new collection.
Last year, a friend invited me to stay near Lake O’Hara at an alpine hut people wait years to stay in. It was a lucky break to spend some time completely disconnected from the world. No showers, no wifi, no Bubly (the horror!). It was all nature, all sky and mountains, and mosquitos. Lots of mosquitos.
I’ve had the privilege to see a lot of natural beauty on this planet. Lake O’Hara still took my breath away. The landscape, somehow both grand and intimate, was a non-stop lesson in light and colour. It was continuous, every stretch of trail opening another moment, another unreal view.
It was this consistency that led me to treasure the journey towards the mountains, not just the peaks themselves. The hikes my group took were a constant delight as the landscape offered up a variety of colours, sounds, and scents. The loose pathways teemed with untouched flora and the routes offered angles that made even minor summits satisfying.
With Yoho, my new mountain collection, I wanted to capture not just the peaks, but the journey you might take on your way to the many mountains that make up this idyllic area. Whether a well-trodden path like in Quiet Arrival, being caught off guard by the distant view of a lake you’ve never seen before as in Lake O'Hara, or catching a peek at your final destination through the light-dappled trees of Edge of the Lake, each piece tries to capture the meaning in the old aphorism, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.” They just so happen to also feature some incredible destinations, as well.
And for those still wondering, Yoho is derived from a Cree word expressing "awe" or "wonder". I think that's fitting.
